BHSCT QI Training Programmes

1. Safety Quality Belfast Programme (SQB) Level 2

SQB is a level 2 quality improvement training programme. The majority of applications chosen are from teams who are working together on an identified project.

Programme Aims/Objectives:

The programme is designed to:

  • To support the Trust’s vision “to be one of the safest, most effective and compassionate health and social care organisations”.
  • Align with the Trust’s Quality Improvement Strategy and the Organisational Development Framework
  • Align with Level 2 of Quality 2020 Attributes Framework
  • Increase the capacity for mentorship of quality improvement projects in the BHSCT through providing participants with the capability to undertake projects utilising the framework provided by improvement science and the model for improvement.
  • Develop an in house network of Quality Improvement Champions who will share their knowledge and expertise and proactively support other Trust colleagues in their pursuit of quality improvement
  • Encourage service user/patient and family/carer involvement in quality improvement and service development across the BHSC

Learning Outcomes:

  • Enhanced knowledge and understanding of quality improvement science and application within health and social care
  • Improved capacity for implementation of quality improvement and achievement of measureable goals within complex and challenging service environments
  • Greater service connectivity internally and externally within a culture of best practice, expertise and support in the pursuit of providing the best care
  • Enhanced team working and communication skills
  • Enhanced understanding of human factors and their relevance to safety in health and social care

Methodology
There are 3 core aspects of the SQB programme:

 

2. The Specialist Trainees Engaged in Leadership Programme (STEP ST5-8) Level 2

STEP offers Level 2 training in quality improvement with each trainee undertaking a quality improvement or patient safety project.

Programme Aim

The STEP programme aims to ensure trainees in the BHSCT are aware of the opportunities available to develop skills in medical leadership.
The curriculum covers the following key areas:

  • Medical Leadership
  • Project Management Skills
  • Overview of BHSCT
  • QI Methodology
  • Patient Safety
  • Patient Client Experience
  • High Performing Teams
  • Human Factors
  • Consultant Interview Preparation
  • Clinical Networks
  • Commissioning

Trainees must also complete the IHI Open School modules.

3. First Steps Programme (FY1 & FY2)

‘First Steps to Leadership’ (First Steps) is a leadership and quality improvement (QI) training programme specifically for Foundation doctors training within BHSCT.

Programme Aim

The programme aims to facilitate the development of leadership and quality improvement skills in foundation doctors. It complements existing programmes such as STEP by introducing leadership and quality improvement to more junior doctors.
The programme runs from September to June and comprises of a combination of online learning, ten monthly evening workshops over the course of the year and experiential learning through completion of a quality improvement project in small groups.

Each workshop is aligned to an online learning module, which is facilitated via the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School. A number of the workshops are facilitated by the First Steps Project Groups which gives participants the opportunity to develop their teaching and presentation skills. Other workshops are facilitated by senior staff within the Trust. The workshops cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to First Steps to Leadership
  • The Model for Improvement
  • Teamwork and Communication
  • Measuring for Improvement
  • Human Factors
  • PDSA Cycles and Run Charts
  • Resilience
  • Stepping Up To FY2

4. Scottish Improvement Leader Programme (ScIL)

The Scottish Improvement Leader (ScIL) Programme is a Level 3 quality improvement programme.

Programme Aims and Objectives
The aim of ScIL is to develop individuals who can design, develop and lead improvement projects, generate support for change and provide expert improvement support and advice.

On completion of the programme, participants will have:

  • an in-depth understanding of core Improvement Science concepts
  • the ability to apply Improvement Science tools, techniques and methods to improvement projects (including system thinking, building knowledge, understanding variation and measurement for improvement, the people side of improvement and how these factors interact)
  • the skills required to lead and manage change for improvement, generating and maintaining support for change, and
  • the ability to teach and coach individuals and teams in Improvement Science.Participants are also expected to undertake their own improvement project throughout the duration of the programme to consolidate their learning.Programme Delivery

The programme structure is based on adult learning theories and has been designed to include a range of delivery methods. These include:

  • Own improvement project to be carried out throughout the duration of the programme.
  • Three workshops of three days each. These are an “all teach, all learn” environment with a focus on peer learning, feedback and sharing project progress. They also include presentations, discussions and practical exercises.
  • Regular GoTo workshop sessions to introduce new concepts, consolidate learning and to give participants an opportunity to provide project updates.
  • Self-directed learning, including videos, online resources and readings.
  • Regular one-to-one mentoring from Scottish quality improvement faculty
  • Buddying between participants.

5. Scottish Leading and Coaching for Improvement Programme

The Scottish Leading and Coaching for Improvement Programme is a three-month quality improvement learning programme designed for people who coach and facilitate improvement teams to support achievement of improvement strategies within their organisation.

Programme Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Scottish Leading and Coaching for Improvement Programme is to develop individuals who will coach and facilitate improvement teams to support achievement of improvement strategies within their organisation.
The objectives of the programme are as follows:

Quality Improvement

  • Explain the key concepts of science of improvement
  • Understand approaches and apply tools and techniques to accomplish improvement interventions
  • Use data for improvement, including how to use run charts
  • Describe concepts of implementation, spread, and scale-up and have the ability to apply as appropriate in a working situation

Coaching

  • Support participants to understand similarities and differences of effective coaching when coaching individuals and teams
  • Apply coaching skills to support teams to develop, test and implement changes
  • Use coaching approaches to achieve deeper conversations to facilitate team work
  • Apply participatory decision making tools to facilitate team decision making

Leadership

  • Use Strength Deployment Inventory to demonstrate self-awareness and work effectively with difference
  • Explain the characteristics of high performing teams and team leaders
  • Apply theories to effectively lead teams through change
  • Use project management tools to lead delivery of improvement interventions

Participants are expected to apply the principles of coaching and leadership to support a team or teams to apply improvement methodology and share their experiences with other programme participants.
